Interior lighting design is a crucial part of achieving the style you want in your home. A lighting guide can be difficult to parse, so our goal today is to just help you identify the lighting trends and ideas that you might want to consider for your home.
The main thing to keep in mind is that you want lighting that accentuates or amplifies your home décor. The last thing you want is lightning that doesn’t match or even detracts from your interior design choices.
Task lighting is for, as you would imagine, brightening spaces where you need to get something done. It can be a leisurely task, like reading or drawing, or a professional task, like working on your computer, but the main point is to provide focused, workable lighting.
Desk and floor lamps are some of the most common task lighting options. These are great lighting solutions for dark rooms, as well.
Ambient lighting is your “average” room lighting. When you want a room uniformly lit, ambient lighting is what you’re searching for. Ambient lighting can be simple but it should serve the room well and fit the overall aesthetic you’re trying to achieve. A good living room light design, for example, should light the room well without overpowering the TV or being so bright as to be uncomfortable.
Ambient lighting fixtures are your chandeliers, your lighting fans, and your wall lights/ceiling lights; very common lighting fixtures, but important decisions all the same.
Much like task lighting, decorative lighting is pretty self-explanatory: it looks nice and adds flavor to a room without providing too much “workable” light. Decorative lighting is key for many great home light designs and should definitely be included in lounges, living rooms, and even bedrooms.
Decorative lighting is your tea lamps, fairy lights, and other novelty lighting options. Also, the right light bulb can make even functional lighting feel decorative and aesthetically pleasing.
Accent lighting is the most niche lighting style, but it can still be useful in your hunt for indoor lighting ideas. Accent lighting is meant to accent décor pieces even more than regular lighting should. Accent lights should accentuate certain pieces while also making the room feel bigger by adding depth.
